Financial
Management for Nonprofits
Written by Peter Konrad and Alys Novak
Published by Regis University
Financial Management for Nonprofits is written for the manager
of a nonprofit organization who loves people and programs but
dreads finance and accounting. These individuals are often
very good managing their staff and leading their boards but
struggle to understand financial statements or make financial
decisions. They are often well educated in social work, psychology
or other related fields but have little or no business background.
Financial Management for Nonprofits is a book dedicated to these
hardworking and caring individuals.
Most nonprofit accounting books are written for accountants,
and as such, assume accounting knowledge beyond most nonprofit
managers. Financial Management for Nonprofits is written instead
for those with little or no accounting experience. It starts
with the basics and builds slowly, emphasizing concepts rather
than numbers. The approach is more like learning a language
than struggling through a math class. For example, there are
important vocabulary words such as assets, revenue, balance
sheet, cash flow, breakeven, etc. that a nonprofit manager should
know. In addition, the manager should understand accounting
principles such as accrual accounting, capitalization and depreciation,
which are like grammar in accounting, the language of business. The
goal of this book is not to make one a bookkeeper but rather
prepare a manager to understand and use financial information
a bookkeeper provides. For example, how does a manager read
a balance sheet and an income statement? How does a small organization
develop a system of internal control to protect their assets
and provide reliable and meaningful financial information? How
does a program manager determine the appropriate price for the
organization’s services? These and many other questions
are answered in Financial Management for Nonprofits.
Peter Konrad, the primary author, is foremost an educator. He
has earned his doctorate in education and was a high school
teacher and principal. He has taught nonprofit financial management
at the graduate school level for over 15 years. He also has
managed nonprofit organizations, with 15 years as Chief Financial
Officer of a large grant making foundation and is a Certified
Public Accountant. His co-author, Alys Novak holds a degree
in journalism and a Masters in Business Administration. She,
too, has a lengthy career as a nonprofit manager. Together they
make this frequently difficult subject, clear and entertaining.
